Lebendige Vergangenheit

Born in in 1890 his debut occurred relatively late, in 1919 at the Teatro Coccia (Novara) as Puccini`s Des Grieux, which was closely associated with him. In "Il Tabarro" he made his debut in 1922 at the Scala of Milan, where he also appeared in the world premiere of "Una Partita" by R. Zandonai. In the Twenties he toured, among other countries, Egypt, Australia as well as North- and South America. In Italy he appeared more and more in provincial theatres from 1933 on. Vocal decline forced him to retire from the operatic stage in 1939 at the age of only 49 and he died at the "Casa di Riposo" founded by Verdi in Milan in 1973. Piccaluga`s singing was closely connected with the „verismo“-period with all its good and bad characteristics. His passionate and convincing acting on stage made quite an impression. He was no refined interpreter, but Piccaluga is well documenting the incredible abundance of Italian voices, even in the B and C category, in the period between the two world wars.
