Lebendige Vergangenheit

Leonard Warren (recte Leonard Warenoff) was born on April 21st 1911 in the Bronx of New York. He probably would have spent his life working in his father's fur business if he had not become, with the help of a friend, member of the choir of Radio City Music Hall. In January 1939 Leonard Warren made his debut at the MET as Paolo in "Simon Boccanegra" keeping up with stars like Lawrence Tibbett, Ezio Pinza, Elisabeth Rethherg and Giovanni Martinelli. During his much too short career the MET had always stayed his artistic home. Apart from two guest appearances in Chicago and in San Francisco and an appearance at the "Scala" of Milan in "Rigoletto" he rarely performed abroad. 359 of all his 610 performances at the MET were in Verdi operas and both his first and his last interpretation was in an opera by this great composer whom he had served so well. It was said of Caruso that "in his fierce striving to be always more than his public expected he became his own executioner. Every performance was a battle against the supreme odds of his own previous triumphs." What proved right for Caruso might also have been true for Leonard Warren. His tragically early death made his public remember him onIy at his best, for each of his performances was his greatest.
