Geboren 1892 in Rom, wollte er ursprünglich Radrennfahrer werden. Bereits 1914 debütierte er in La Spezia als Oroveso, doch seine Karriere nahm erst nach dem ersten Weltkrieg ihren Lauf. 1919 debütierte er in Florenz, von 1921-26 sang er während der Toscanini-Ära an der Mailänder Scala. 1926 verliess er Italien und war bis 1948 Mitglied der New Yorker Metropolitan Opera, wo er wieder mit Toscanini zusammentraf und mit vielen der größten Sänger seiner Zeit auftrat. Er gab auch zahlreiche internationale Gastspiele, u.a. an der Covent Garden Opera, der Paris Opéra, bei den Salzburger Festspielen, in San Francisco und Chicago. Nach 1948 wendete sich Ezio Pinza zunehmend dem leichteren Repertoire zu. Während dieser zweiten Karriere übernahm er Filmrollen und trat im Fernsehen auf. Am Broadway trat Ezio Pinza in der Rolle des Emile de Becque im Rogers und Hammerstein Musical South Pacific mit außergewöhnlichem Erfolg auf. 1957 starb er in Stamford, Connecticut. Resuming his career after the war was over, he made his Scala-debut in 1921 and remained there until 1926 throughout the Toscanini-era. He left Italy and made his debut at the Metropolitan Opera in 1926 in Spontini’s La Vestale and remained there until 1948. He made international guest appearances at the Covent Garden, the Paris Opéra, at the Salzburg Festival, in San Francisco and Chicago). He spent the major part of his time at the Met, appearing in more than 850 performances, in New York and on tour, of 51 different roles. From 1948 on he continued his great career appearing in films and in musicals at the Broadway. With his good looks and splendid voice unimpaired by time he had tremendous success in the Rodgers and Hammerstein musical South Pacific. He died in 1957 in Stamford, Connecticut.
