Armand Tokatyan wurde als Sohn annenischer Eltern am 16. Juni 1894 in Plovdiv/ Bulgarien geboren. Schon bald übersiedelte die Familie nach Alexandria/Ägypten, wo er, ebenso wie später in Paris, als Unterhaltungssänger in Cafes auftrat. In Paris erlernte Tokatyan auch das Schneiderhandwerk, kehrte jedoch 1914 nach Ägypten zurück und trat zwischen 1914 und 1918 in Alexandria und Kairo in Operetten auf. Auf Anraten des Direktors des Opernhauses von Kairo beschloss der Tenor sich als Opernsänger ausbilden zu lassen und wurde Schüler von Nino Cairone in Mailand. Dort gab er 1921 auch sein Debut als Puccinis Des Grieux und sang in weiterer Folge in Cremona und Monza. Als Mitglied der Scotti Opera Company unternahm Tokatyan 1921/22 eine Tournee durch die USA und debütierte am 14. Februar 1923 in der amerikanischen Erstaufführung von Vittadinis „Anima Allegra" an der New Yorker Metropolitan Opera. Während seiner ersten Saison an der MET war der Sänger weiters als Nicias in „Thais" sowie als Don Jose zu hören. Der Tenor blieb bis 1932/33 Mitglied der MET und kehrte für die Spielzeiten 1935-37, 1938-42 und 1943-46 an das New Yorker Opernhaus zurück. Er genoss beim dortigen Publikum große Beliebtheit und war häufig bei den Saturday Matinee-Rundfunkübertragungen der MET zu hören. Tokatyans Repertoire an der MET umfasste ganze 38 Rollen, wie z.B. Romeo, Faust, Loris in „Fedora", Fenton, Pinkerton, Hoffmann, Enzo in „La Gioconda", Avito in „L'amore dei tre Re", den Herzog in „Rigoletto", Rodolfo, Dimitri in „Boris Godunov", Cavaradossi, Lisinio in „La Vestale", Vasco da Gama in „L'Africana", Canio, Almaviva und Turiddu. Viele dieser Rollen musste er sich mit seinen Kollegen Beniamino Gigli, Giacomo Lauri Volpi, Giovanni Martinelli, Mario Chamlee oder Edward Johnson teilen. An der MET wirkte der Sänger auch in einigen wichtigen Premieren mit: Raoul Laparras „La Habanera" (1924), De Pallas „La vida breve" (1926), Puccinis „La Rondine" (1928) und Rossinis „Signor Bruschino" (1932). Parallel zu seiner Tätigkeit in New York sang Tokatyan für mehrere Saisonen an den Opernhäusern von Chicago, Los Angeles und San Francisco und gab 1934 … Armand Tokatyan was born to parents of Armenian descent on June 16th 1894 in Plovdiv/Bulgaria. The family soon moved to Alexandria/Egypt where Tokatyan was engaged as chansonier in small cafäs. He continued to perform in cafäs in Paris where he also was trained to become a professional tailor. Upon returning to Egypt in 1914 the singer appeared in operetta in theatres in Alexandria and Cairo between 1914 and 1918. Responding to the advice of the director of the Opera House in Cairo, who urged him to pursue a career in opera, Tokatyan became a pupil of Nino Cairone in Milan. There, he made his debut as Des Grieux in Puccini 's "Manon Lescaut" and went on to appear in Cremona and Monza. As a member of the Scotti Opera Company he undertook a tour to the United States in 1921/22 and celebrated his debut at the Metropolitan Opera in New York on February 14th 1923 in the first American performance of Vittadini's "Anima Allegra". During his first MET-season the tenor was furthermore heard as Nicias in "Thais" and Don Jose. Until 1932/33 he stayed at the MET and returned for the seasons f935-37, 1938-42 and 1943-46. Tokatyan was a great favourite of the New York public and frequently took part in the MET's Saturday Matinee broadcasts. The tenor's repertory at the MET contained a total of 38 roles, such as Romeo, Faust, Loris in "Fedora", Fenton, Pinkerton, Hoffmann, Enzo in "La Gioconda", Avito in "L'amore dei tre Re", the Count in "Rigoletto'', Rodolfo, Dimitri in "Boris Godunov", Cavaradossi, Licinio in "La Vestale", Vasco da Gama, Canio, Almaviva, Turiddu, etc. To a great extent he had to share these roles with his colleagues Beniamino Gigli, Giacomo Lauri-Volpi, Giovanni Martinelli, Mario Chamlee or Edward Johnson. The artist was chosen to appear in several important premieres: Raoul Laparra's "La Habanera" (1924), De Falla's "La vida breve" (1926), Puccini's "La Rondine" (1928) and Rossini's "Signor Bruschino" (1932). Apart from his engagements at the Metropolitan Opera Tokatyan was heard for several seasons at the Opera Houses of Chicago, Los Angeles and San Francisco. In 1934 …
